Oxygen permeability OTR according to ASTM 3985

  • by

Description:

Standard test method for oxygen gas transmission rate through plastic film and sheeting using a Coulometric Sensor.

Result unit:
Oxygen transmission rate (O2GTR) mol/(m2*s), oxygen permeance (PO2) mol/(m2*s*Pa), oxygen permeability coefficient mol/m*s*Pa

(Related) Standards:

DIN 53380-3

ISO 15105

Test method:

The test sample is mounted in a permeation cell so as to form the barrier between two chambers. Both chambers are evacuated. Afterwards, one chamber is filled with the nitrogen, the other chamber contains oxygen. The oxygen permeates into the nitrogen carrier gas through the barrier and it is transported to the coulometric detector producing an electrical current. It’s magnitude is proportional to the amount of oxygen flowing into the detector.

Detection limit:
0.05-2000  (> 200 masked) cc/m2/day, higher permeability after Mecadi in-house method or ISO 15105.

Required specimen:

For testing please send us an sample of the approximate size of a sheet of paper (DIN A4, 210*297 mm). Please contact us for non-flat specimen (technically possible).

The standard proposes a sample area of 50 cm2 – 100 cm2, smaller areas on request. Our standard is to measure samples of 20 µm – 3 mm, others possible with Mecadi permeation cell. The specimens shall be uniform in thickness, representative for the material and free of pinholes and folds. On request we measure your sample thickness according to ISO 4593.

We recommend the measurement of three independent samples per test, in case the specimen has two same sides. In the case of two different sides, the permeation has to be measured in two directions, 3 times for each side. We perform the preparation of the samples for you. If you want to conduct the cutting of the specimens yourself, please contact us for the required dimensions.

For sensitive coating test it sometimes makes sense to prepare first the support followed by the coating. Please inform us, if your samples tend to crack under applied pressure (of the test gas or the sealings).

Testing medium:

Oxygen > 99,5 %, dry.

In-house methods: Mixtures that contain oxygen (E.g. air), gases under a pressure till 100 bar.

Test conditions:

Standard: 15 °C – 40 °C, others possible with Mecadi in-house method.

Humidity: 0 % relative humidity – 90 % relative humidity.

On request, we measure under other conditions. Please contact us for information on special effects and requirements. Also possible are temperature profiles (nonisothermic measurements) for determining the glass transistion temperatures and the influence of media and pressure to polymer properties. Based on this method Mecadi offers further examination to determine gas solubilities (sorption and desorption), diffusion coefficients and the measurement of break through times through barriers. Furthermore interactions between media and polymer can be investigated. So the predictions according resitance, physical and chemical reactions under process conditions can help in the selection process of materials.
